You may already know to wake up early to avoid the sun, heat, and humidity of the summer, but here are some things you may not know that can help you make the most out of your summer training:
1. Eating a popsicle before you head out the door can help lower your body temperature by 1-2 degrees and has been shown to enhance performance. Mix up your favorite sports beverage into a popsicle mold to maximize your hydration while you’re at it and avoid the stomach upset of a sugary popsicle. (Pro Tip: don't try this for the first time on race day!)
2. Use your heart rate! You may feel that your performance is suffering during the humid days of summer, putting way more effort into keeping the same pace. Well, that feeling is accurate. If you monitor your heart rate using a chest strap, you’ll find that you would need to slow down to keep the same heart rate. What this means is that you are putting in the same effort, despite going slower. This is important to make sure you are not overreaching and overtraining by running too hard, too often. We guarantee that using your heart rate to gauge your effort will have you feeling fresh, fast and ready for PRs in the fall!
